The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
5.0
This book hits right in the feels. It's a beautiful story about the evolution of a friendship and how grudges affect our relationships.
I liked this story because it was about a Korean Island before, during, and after WWII without focusing too much on the war. I appreciated that it was more about day-to-day life for this society and how the culture changed as a result of WWII, the fight for Korean independence and the struggle between North/South Korea as independent nations. This is a culture and time I knew little about, previously.
I also love that this society is "matrifocal" or woman-led and that most of the main characters are women.
Overall, this book was kind of a long one but it told a great story that needed all the time to build an emotionally impactful tale.
