I always say when I come to one of her works she brings to life communities in a special way and that was no different here. I do think the synopsis is potentially misleading, I mentally knew the timeline of the book would have overlap with 2020 when I picked it up but I did not know how much this work would look into 2020 and the role the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd had on this small town. I am so glad one of my favorite authors chose to capture this moment in our history and equally glad I waited until 2023 to read it so it was more cathartic than triggering for me. Also Tookie is an amazing character and it was because I loved this character and her voice that I found this, essentially slice of life novel, so engaging and hard to put down.
