Goth: A History by Lol Tolhurst
3.0

As many others reviewed as well, this is not a real history of goth. So I won’t touch on that cause it has already been well explored my plenty of other reviewers.

I would have difficulty saying that this book is well written. At times it feels incredibly disjointed and the pacing is not consistent at all. Some parts of this book flow quickly and other times it’s just really boring.

It took me a while to realize that the trick to enjoying this book more was to listen to the music Tolhurst writes about while I read. It really slows the book down, and it took me a lot longer to finish because of this, but I enjoyed it so much more by doing this.

Now for the good: Tolhurst certainly lists out his favorites in the genre, but honestly, he has great taste, and his cometary about the music and his stories with the creators are really intriguing and insightful. He speaks so proudly of his peers and their accomplishments. He truly is a fan of Goth and cares very much about that sub-culture because of the intent he has found there. He experiences were rich and stories honest, especially the parts of the story that paint him poorly. Tolhurst is very open about his problems with alcoholism and substance addiction when he was in the Cure.

I began reading this book as a casual fan of the Cure, and now I can say that they’re now one of my favorite bands. Again, I highly suggest listening to the music while reading. I discovered so much new music!
