I picked this up after a bit of a reading slump as I can always rely on St. Mary's to pick me up. Jodi Taylor is a master at sticking her characters into a series of progressively sticky situations and hoping they get out of it alive. And this is absolutely no exception. Max finds herself once again on the wrong side of authority when there's a change of management at St. Mary's. And when two of her team go missing in ancient Babylon, she's left with no choice. Unfortunately, that means saying goodbye to St. Mary's as she finds herself sacked - and not for the first time either. This may however be the last.

This is as per the norm a great romp through various periods of history, yet it has a tight narrative behind it and keeps the tension high as disaster hits and hope is running out. Max running her mouth against authority is hardly new, but is exceptionally well written and highly entertaining to read. The historical information in the jumps is well researched and depicted, never info dumping but giving you a taste of each time and place down to the sounds, sights and smells.

All in all, exactly what the doctor ordered and I look forward to starting the next instalment.
