A really exquisite novel, which is so psychologically profound, that it becomes impossible for the reader not to be completely carried away with it... I am astonished how some writers literally guide me through people and life. They have such a nuanced ability to discern every shade of a person's character, which is a gift that always amazes me. This is the true writer's talent - to know the people without ever having met them. To intellectually grasp the person's very nature and its infinite possible subtle manifestations.

The plot is by no means usual, even though it is about an eternal problem - the one of infidelity. Yet the good soldier himself is a really honorable man indeed... I find it strange that I myself can forgive a mistake of such magnitude. But I completely do. I think it is because Leonora simply does not understand the view of life that Edward has. I mean, it is extremely unusual for an adulterer to be highly moral in terms of his social duties and to be so sentimentally vulnerable at the same time... this is what makes the whole story so complicated. Leonora is also not to be blamed for everything, she has her absolutely rightful reasons. But, in the end, she is so sininster and bitter and so extremely talented at being such... I would not mention the other characters, because they are developed in an equally complicated way and I do not want to spoil the plot.

I am also very fond of the way F M Ford tackles the issue of religion and the influence it has on people. But that is a completely different topic of discussion...
