When I saw this book at the library, I had high hopes for a retelling of Medusa’s story from a feminist eye. Yet, for a story claiming to be about Medusa, she is barely in it. The real story is a miss match of a number of Greek lore mentioning Athene, Poseidon, or Perseus. Even if it wasn’t what the cover sleeve advertised, it should have been interesting. However, it was lacking: lacking consistency with jarring changes of narration and story between chapters, lacking of character development, and lacking of emotional depth. What bothered me the most is that scenes where the emotions should have truly been felt—the aftermath of Medusa’s encounter with Poseidon and the aftermath of her curse—instead felt apathetic. The ending held much potential and was unique, but had nothing that built up to it.
