I was really ready to wax poetic about how brilliant this is, until I listened to the author’s note in the 10th anniversary edition.
This is the blueprint for “I support women’s rights and women’s wrongs”.
I was thinking how brilliant it was to show dynamics in heterosexual relationships that are so dominated by the patriarchy that they both HATE women.
It turned the “missing girl” story on its head, and I think had I not seen the movie 10 years ago, the twists would have been more impactful.
I definitely understand why this was such a moment, but then hearing the author talk about how “amiable” and “hapless” Nick is, and how she sees a lot of herself in him?? Girl.
Nick is AT LEAST as toxic as Amy is, but because she’s a woman, she’s a psycho bitch. What could have been a brilliant criticism of the patriarchy ended up supporting it.
I also felt it was a bit too long and that the ending was mildly disappointing?
Idk I have a lot of thoughts.
