Emma
by Jane Austen
I didn't click with this one. I know that Emma is a favorite of a lot of people, but I didn't like it. I don't like Frank's immature silliness very much, Jane is bland, Harriet is shallow, Mr Woodhouse is annoying and selfish, Mrs Weston is just okay. Mr and Mrs Elton are interesting just because of how horrible they are, and Mr Weston was funny because he didn't put up with anyone's shit. I loved Mr Knightley of course, but it feels like he isn't there for most of the book. We all know Emma's faults, but that's not what I don't like about her arc. I wanted more of a happy ending for her. At the end of the day she did suffer quite a lot(and me with her) and I feel that she and I deserve more of a reward for it. It was a happy ending, but it was very abbreviated. I wanted more from the ending in general. More secrets and closeness with Jane, more domestic happiness from Mr Knightley, more growth from Harriet. For all this book had to offer, it feels like Jane Austen decided to skip over or avoid everything that might've been my favorite part.
