North Woods

I was expecting something a little less accessible based on what I had heard and read, so I was pleasantly surprised that it’s a little out there but not too hard to break into. Most of the stories and styles clicked nicely for me, and it was sort of reminiscent of Richard Powers in having the ability to make me wonder at our smallness in historical and natural contexts (though without some of the frustrations I have with him). My main complaints here are that it’s a bit self-indulgent and that the supernatural elements, which had a purpose/conclusion I generally liked, felt a little out of place to me. I suspect this isn’t necessarily a consensus opinion. Regardless, on the whole a solidly entertaining book that handles transitions between styles and time periods deftly, with some good bits to chew on w/r/t history, the US, and our place in the world.
