First Test by Tamora Pierce

4.0

Audiobook.

This is my first Tamora Pierce novel, and I loved it! I'm so excited to read the rest of the series. I picked this one randomly because it was the first in a series available on audiobook when I was about to start a long drive, and I wasn't disappointed.

I wanted to hear more about the Lionness but I assume that's a different series and this is just an offshoot of it. I liked Kel a lot but I did feel like she was a little over the top sometimes with her sense of righteousness and taking on things much bigger than her while refusing all help. I felt like the book ended rather abruptly, but again it wasn't too surprising for a fantasy series that I knew had other installments. It was also pretty short.

A pretty traditional fantasy story about a girl being allowed (tentatively) to join the ranks of pages and study to be a knight. It reminded me a lot of Tom Brown's Schooldays with lots of young boy shenanigans and dealing with teasing and bullies. I want to see what else Pierce has out there!
