This was a good set up book. The beginning did a good job setting up Hadrian's origins, his father and how the universe is set up. I was hooked right away. Then we travelled to Emesh and I felt like we were stuck not doing a lot. The middle was slow and we met a lot of people who didn't seem like would stick around in the series as a whole. The last 200 pages had me re-intrigued in the happenings of the universe as well as Had's own journey. I also found that Had had zero control of his own plot which got annoying after a while. I would like my characters to have some influence of the events around them.
