The Listeners by Jordan Tannahill

3.0

Claire is a high-school teacher, married to the love of her life, with a daughter she adores and one random night she begins to hear a hum. The hum is a low decibel vibration that keeps her up at all hours, and leaves her struggling to concentrate during the day. No one can tell her what it is, or why she is hearing it. Her family and friends think she is losing her mind, and then one day she meets other people who can hear it too.

The Good:
A very interesting premise! It seems to cross genres between psychological thriller and contemporary fiction. There is a thinly veiled metaphor for cultism, and it reads very very well.

The Bad:
I was not a fan of the ending. I found at a certain point it felt like everything bad was happening to Claire, and some things seemed quite far fetched.

The Verdict:
A good read, but not a great one!
