Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
by Lewis Carroll
I wish I liked this book.
I'm a pretty quirky person. I like bright things, bold colors, always odd numbers instead of even, and I enjoy my fair share of nonsense. Normally, when I enjoy a movie, I excitedly read the book and find it's approximately thirteen times better than the movie. I enjoyed Disney's adaptation of this story, with little cartoon Alice and the singing, dancing flowers. It was never my favorite, but I did like it at least a little. I always expected the book to be an undertaking to read - a long thing, with lots of vocabulary to parse, but with much more plot and intensity and brightness than the movie adaptation which would make it more than worthwhile and would probably make me enjoy the story more.
That's not what I found. I read through the book in an afternoon. I feel I tromped through not the wistful, whimsical, bright, colorful, even musical version of Wonderland which Disney prepared me for, but a long explanation of a nonsensical, unemotional, and fairly plotless dream. While it's somewhat fun to read that kind of thing and I found myself smiling or laughing at small points as I would at something silly in my own dreams...I just wanted more from a famous classic. Now I feel the need to look up exactly what about this has captivated so many people and how it became a classic in the first place. No disrespect intended to anyone who loves it; I don't even claim it's awful! I just wanted something more, and I'm a bit disappointed.
