Escaping from Houdini
by Kerri Maniscalco
Wow I enjoyed this one much more than I thought I would!
I've been avoiding this book since it came out because I heard about the dreaded love triangle and was NOT trying to read about anyone as a potential love interest except Thomas. But I ended up falling in love with the circus and the world the Kerri Maniscalco created in this addition to the series.
Yes I hated the relationship between Audrey and Mephistopheles. I don't understand why the author felt the need to bring that sort of sub-plot into the book especially since it really made me doubt Audrey's true feeling for Thomas and if she really cared about him as much as he cares about her. With Mephistopheles, she could get that freedom that she seems to believe she'll never get by marrying Thomas and by the end of the book, while she does choose Thomas and say he's the one she can't live without, she doesn't deny that a part of her cared about Mephistopheles and could see them together "in a different life". Sorry but I'm not really about that. I also don't like the way things end for Thomas and Audrey. It felt super open-ended and all the issues and doubt wasn't really answered or dealt with. Not to mention Audrey never was truly honest with Thomas throughout the entire book, including the ending even though she kept saying she'd tell him everything when the investigation was over. I hope we see that in the next book because things felt very much rushed at the end and like the author forgot to tie some of the strings she left loose.
Also, surprisingly, I ended up liking and feeling bad for Mephistopheles. I would say I'd want a book for him but I'm not really into reading about a guy who is hung up on the girl he'll never have. But he was interesting and could definitely serve as a great hero/love interest if only he didn't already play a part in Audrey and Thomas's love story.
I guessed the killer almost immediately but I love that this book had me doubting and questioning everyone the entire time. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I'm happy I finally read it!
