In Another Country by Ernest Hemingway

4.0

Another quick read by Hemingway (a very enjoyable audiobook as well). Structurally, Hemingway creates three recurrent ideas: a break with society; the establishment of a "code"; and a terrible wound (which influences the first two factors). The narrator feels alienated.

The first half mostly working with setting and various observations, offering onsite while also creating that atmosphere of alienation. We pick up on the narrator’s own sense of insecurity through the way he sees the world.

Then, the story appears to shift, and the major is introduced, with honest and realistic commentary. We finally see the classic, Hemingway combination of the older and younger hero. The man who has confronted the hardships of life, and the man who has just entered the world of war and violence.
