A Drop of Corruption
by Robert Jackson Bennett
THE ENDINGGGGGGG
———
I started this one pretty much immediately after book one. I wasn’t as sucked into the story here and so it took me a while to finish it, but it was still very solid. we follow din and ana to a new part of the map which was fun and allowed for more exploration of this world and for getting more deep into the politics of the empire itself. I felt that din had much less character development in this one vs book one and we spend a lot more time on the development of some of the other characters new in this one, particularly malo who I absolutely loved.

the mystery here gets slowly more intense as new pieces are revealed, although I never really felt the heavy seriousness of the situation as some of the characters did. the twists and reveals in this one were more complex than book one, and I think that made this one less of a whodunit and more of a mystery that was one plot of many. on top of the investigation, there’s subplots about the local government, the empire and its relationship with its neighbors, and a bit more about the science behind the grafts and augmentations gleaned from the leviathans. the real highlight of this to me was getting to see more of ana’s character — she’s a more central character in this story, so we spend more time with her and her eccentricities. I can’t say too much since I want to avoid spoilers but the biggest reveal in this book to me is not about the murder mystery at all, and it had me absolutely SHOOK. eagerly awaiting book 3 next summer!
