"Your letters have been a light for me to follow. Your words? A sublime feast that fed me on days when I was starving."

CAN YOU HEAR MY HEART BREAKING??!?! Why did this book break me and then put me back only to break me again in the end?
I initially picked up this book because it tackled 2 genres I really want to get into: fantasy and historical fiction. Of course the romance between the 2 main characters were also highlighted throughout this book, but it didn't shy away from the magical world building and the engaging narrative of both POVs. The audiobook was very well narrated and I think it made me feel attached to the characters with the way the narrators and the author brings them to life.
I could write an essay on Mr Roman (Cantankerous yet Charming) Carver Kitt, but I will just say, HE'S THE PERFECT FICTIONAL MAN, AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL. The way he abandons... literally everything and follows the girl he's secretly pining for into battle (also his workplace rival)? *Chef's kiss* the letters he exchanges with Iris (via typewriter...hello?) felt like hugs and comforted my 2021 self who also had to deal with someone who sent anonymous letters. He healed parts of me I had repressed long ago and gave me comfort...all while being completely fictional.
Highly recommend it to romance readers who'd love to explore more genres without straying too far and even fantasy lovers would love how spellbinding the setting is, and love the fact that you simply get transported back in time to witness this battle and the ensuing romance unfold.
