I felt the character of Emile was very flat, I have no idea of what went on inside of him. Like doesn’t he miss his family? Does he never have any regret about his decision to leave his old life behind? Is he never sad? I was also curious to read about how he would handle his illness, but halfway through the story, when his illness became worse, the story shifted to Joanne’s point of view. And Joanne’s backstory felt a bit rushed at times.
Overall I’m kind of disappointed at the lack of depth throughout the story, which made the characters less loveable and made myself indifferent to how it all ended.
