I liked this a lot more than Legendborn. Everything seemed better explained and manageable. There were still a lot of new concepts but nothing out of reach. Bree is reacting more typically to her circumstances and, maybe because of that, I feel like I understand her choices better. She seems like a person to me, not a plot device! The book got a little long winded, I still think there’s a lot that needed to be picked up from the first book to really understand what was going on so it felt a little like it was trying to make up for it’s failures. The good news is, you can pick this up whenever and still feel like you know what happened in book 1! The bad news is that the last…maybe 75 pages, give or take, was really convincing. Because of the concept of descendants, ghost possessions, talking with the dead, and just general ancestry, the last few chapters really test your knowledge of who is who, what side are they on, and I’m not EXACTLY sure if I understood who was who, but I think I got it…I THINK.
