The Traitor's Kingdom
by Erin Beaty
As a person following this book trilogy for three years now, I have to say, it did feel sufficiently wrapped up. I enjoyed the thing of the ends and the conclusivity of the book. There were certainly a lot of other things I liked about the book too (I did give it four stars). I liked Sage and Alex's relationship. I liked the parallels between Sage and Alex and Zoraya and Huzar. I liked Sage's inward thinking about her own growth and how she needed to grow more. I think this book of all three most explicitly had Sage reflecting on what she had done wrong, why it was wrong, and how she needed to improve. And I do love me some character development.
But, of course there were a few things I didn't like. Mainly, that I knew who did it from the beginning. Literally right after the assassins (that's not much of a spoiler, I feel like there's assassins in every book), I was able to know who sent them. But then I had to read the rest of the book of them trying to figure it out. Sage really should have figured it out sooner, she was in the best position to, she had all the information. Anyway, to some extent it was a little painful, and also meant I did not get to experience the thrill of the finding out or the plot twist at the end. The other thing, which really is a thing started in book two but that I was thinking about a lot, was the supposed need to write in Lani's accent. They're all switching languages all the time, you're telling me none of the other characters even have an accent? No, just the brown one. I found it to be pretty offensive and unnecessary.
However, I would like to end the review in a good note. One of the things that bugged me about the last two books is that at the end, someone HAS TO die. While I can see how you can carry over into the next books and have these deaths drive the remaining characters, it felt less about characters and more about shock factor. Although at the same time, that's how war is. However, I felt that the way this book handled killing people off was better than the other two.
Overall, I did really enjoy reading this series and getting to spend my time in this world. I would recommend this series to fans of daughter of the pirate king.
