Darling by K. Ancrum

5.0

It has been some time since I read an entire book in one sitting, but Darling was such a thrilling page turner that there was no way I could put it down. I stay up until 1am to finish this book. With the Wicker King, The Weight of the Stars, and now Darling, I can happily confirm that Kayla continues to not miss and that she is my favorite author.

I highly recommend this story. The cast is large and I often struggle remember the names of every character but you better believe I knew everyone by the time this story was over and I was deeply invested in them, even if they only showed up for a few pages. That’s how memorable every single one of these characters were. Shoutout especially to my queen, Dorothy. And to Prentis, who had my heart immediately. Obviously no spoilers but listen, there is a point in this book where my jaw dropped and I had to rethink my life. Like the plot twisted was indeed quite twisted and sinister. Disney’s Peter Pan did not prepare me for this both enthralling and stressful plot, let me tell you. At no point could I guess how this story was gonna end.

Something I want to highlight is that this book masterfully showcases a very particular kind of violence. A violence that is both subtle and all consuming. So I would recommend checking out the trigger warnings for this book that I believe are on Kayla’s website. Also, there is an Inuyasha reference in here that put a smile on my face after what could only be described as a very long and stressful night.

The only nitpick I have is that there is an international student character in this book. There's mention that he and another character in the story work at a clothing store over the summer. Here's the thing, people here on student visas are only allowed to work for their school/campus, so that character wouldn't be legally allowed to do that. I know because I am an international student. But like I said, that's a nitpick and doesn't in anyway impact the story.

I highly recommend this book!
