rprav8r 's review for:
By the Shores of Silver Lake
by Laura Ingalls Wilder
I do not remember these books being so dark! I had this mental picture of happy fun olden days in my head. But this one starts out with the 1-2-3 of the whole family getting scarlet fever and Mary going blind, Jack the dog dying of old age, and their having to sell the farm and move because they're in debt. No matter, my 5 year old sees only the happy fun olden days.
I still love the description of the railroad grading, which I remember vividly from when I was a child. That might be my favorite part of the whole book.
