Night Watcher by Daphne Woolsoncroft follows Nola, a bump-in-the-night radio host and podcaster in Portland, Oregon. When a caller is killed on air, Nola knows her childhood nightmare has returned; the Hiding Man. The stalker turned serial killer struck the area years before and the only victim to survive an attack was Nola herself. Things turn for the worse when things go missing and people’s stories start to fall apart. Nola must figure out who the Hiding Man is but she doesn’t know who she can trust. Is the Hiding Man hiding in plain sight?
I was very much in the mood for a spooky detective story and Woolsoncroft did not disappoint. I enjoyed the characters as they felt believable and had a natural growth throughout the story. I think that the setting Woolsoncroft chose was really good because the Northwest seemed to be swarming with serial killers. The dark and dreary atmosphere also added to the story.
My only qualm with the story was that it was a little formulaic but it wasn’t that big of an issue so I was still able to really enjoy it.
