The Woman in White
by Wilkie Collins
I surprised myself by enjoying this classic very much. Despite how it promised more than it delivered in the end, parts of narratives that were drawn out, despite how my personal disappointment of Marian Halcome fell down from her prior status as the awesome intellectual heroine to supporting character at the end, despite sort of anticlimatic events followed after the big revelation, I was enthralled. The haunting atmosphere, the Gothic element, the suspense was held till the end. To me, the wiriting was so ravishing and endlessly absorbing, the characters, with the exception of Laura, was well-drawn and captivating. The plot was indeed too melodramatic and theatrical at times. I found myself asking how was this even possible? Such drama! This was simple and could easily resolved. Why people were so gullible? Why were you people so melodramatic? But damn, it was so entertaning, I was amused and deeply fascinated.
