Overall I enjoyed this book. It's about de-extintion of some really cool prehistoric animals, which I thought was really neat. It takes place at a fancy resort where people pay stupid amounts of money to get to interact with these de-extinct animals. The concept is really cool. But, there is a murder at the resort and things get bad, and they get weird. The murder mystery aspect of this book was really well written. The plot as a whole was good, and there are a lot of elements of this story that make the book work overall. I'm glad I read it, but I'm not sure that I'll read the sequel. There were some things in this book that I found distasteful, problematic, and unrealistic.
This book went on and on about how big of a woman Cash was. I was shocked to see this was published in 2024. These weight comments read like something from back in the day where it was, unfortunately, more acceptable to make those weight comments. And there were several mentions of how big she was and about her own body dismorphia that added literally zero to the plot. At the end of the book she eats half a sticky bun and says she'll make up for it by skipping dinner. Gag. I hated that. Cash herself was an unlikeable character. She was just rude and abrupt and I was annoyed by her in general. I don't really want to read another book that focuses on her. But the other thing that bothered me was McFall. He was supposed to be the head of the Colorado Bureu of Investigations and he was an absolute coward. It didn't fit for me. I get that being the head is a lot of politics and being a mouth piece, but you rise up to that by being in the field. In no way was it believable that the head of the CBI would just roll over and let a movie crew stay on when everyone was told to evacuate. I get why it was important to the story, but it wasn't done well. His character was just so unbelievable.
