Defy the Worlds by Claudia Gray

3.0

I'm not sure what keeps me from loving this series, there's a lot to chew on when it comes to ethics, religion, politics and the nature of what it means to be alive, all fascinating and well explored here. Claudia Gray also knows how to tell a thrilling and well-paced tale, full of adventure and all the feels. I was amped for Noemi and Abel to reunite, and the manoeuvrings of the many who would do them harm made for great villains, as their motivations are carefully explored.

I wonder if it's not the curse of the YA trilogy striking again, it kind of felt like the story doesn't quite get going before it ends on the obligatory second volume cliffhanger. I would have preferred more story in the one volume, but I guess the market doesn't work that way.

Still, I'm with Noemi and Abel until the end of the line, let's hope these crazy kids can make it work while the universe around them falls to pieces.
