The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa
3.0

"still, their faces were calm and they stared into the distance with eyes as still as a lonely swamp deep in the woods. in those eyes, no doubt, were all sorts of memories that had been lost to us."

if something disappeared from your life, how long would it take for you to notice? would you remember? how do you remember something that is gone?

some elements of this book have nods to pieces like 1984 (memory police/thought police), a governing body has control over what exists. things disappear and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

"the pages of the book had opened and fluttered through the air just the way birds had once spread their wings and flown off to distant places. but this memory, too, was soon erased by the flames, leaving behind nothing but the burning night."

can be a little repetitive sometimes, but has a potent vibe. little bit of Stockholm syndrome thrown in and romance that feels forced. there's an element of a collective consciousness/hysteria??? which is pretty sweet. very thought-provoking overall & interesting.
