I couldn't put this one by Leila Mottley down. It tells the story of Kiara, a Black young girl, trying to get by in Oakland and support her family. Her dad is gone. Mom is in jail. Her older brother spends all his time trying to make it big as a music artist. So it's up to Kiara to help provide and pay their bills. Kiara finds herself a job. But it requires her to put herself in harm's way, night after night. There are moments throughout that were graphic and difficult to read. But those moments shed light on the real, graphic nature of working on the streets.
I loved this story that the author created, which was inspired by true events. It offers a perspective of why people do certain things - anything for the sake of family, biological and chosen.
