The Wind Singer by William Nicholson
5.0
Stumbled across this on a used book store hunt for new reads and I was immediately intrigued. This is definitely the sort of read that lasts for a single sitting: the young characters are battling against a world that is a perfect meritocracy on the surface and quite the dictatorship from every other angle. The social structure is the most fascinating part of the novel, and the twisted fate of children sent to special study is particularly delightful. Wish I'd had this book when I was young--makes me think even today.
