Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson

This story hit the ground running and went right on until the end, pulling me into the world and mythos and taking me for a very enjoyable ride.

I loved Artemisia as a heroine; she's not afraid to do what she has to do, but she is still a very flawed individual and it shows throughout the story. Although the bulk of the story is Artemisia trying to save the land she lives in, there's enough time dedicated to her growing as a person and learning how to make friends. I loved seeing how her relationships with the different characters developed throughout the novel.

Probably what I love most about this novel though is that our lead is female...and there's no love interest. Those looking for it might find POTENTIAL, but not an actual love story -and I'm so thankful for that. Since I was a young adult myself, I wanted more female-led stories with no romance, so I'm happy girls with similar mindsets have a book like this.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good spooky read that's similar in feel to Garth Nix's original "Abhorsen" trilogy.
