I'm a bit conflicted on my rating, but I think I'm going to leave this at a 4-star for now.

This was very slow to get into. I didn't really find myself invested until about halfway through (which is 300 pages into this 600 page tome 😭). But, I persisted (much in thanks to the audiobook partially narrated by Fiona Hardingham) because I trusted that Cassandra Clare would pull through in the end. And... I think she did... mostly.

This had so many shocking twists and turns in the second half of the story, and I found myself finally coming to care for some of the characters and their relationships with one another. I really do think Clare weaved a beautiful, rich fantasy world - very much unlike that of the Shadowhunters. I enjoyed learned (albeit little) about the magic system, the various cultures within the world, as well as the political intrigue. There's lots of moving parts and I'm sure many more reveals ahead. I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series!

(Although the two main love interests are het pairings, nearly everyone in this world is queer and queerness is the norm... which... love obvs).
