Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Unpopular opinion alert, but I didn’t like this. I admittedly ended up DNFing Legendborn and I think it’s just reader preference, which is why I didn’t rate it one or two stars. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I had trouble with grasping the magic system, but I think that’s because Bree does, too. Bree has no idea what’s happening to her and we’re learning about the magical world as he does, which I think was my problem. I needed the world to be laid out already and I don’t like how discovering how this magic system works was part of the plot.

I also had a hard time with the characters and separating them. Their voices weren’t unique enough for me and I didn’t feel a real connection with any of them. I think I liked William the most and, as far as I got, he wasn’t a main character.

However, the writing is solid, the setting is well developed, and the story has a solid plot line. If you’re okay with not knowing the world building and learning something fundamental along with a character, then I think you’ll love this book. Legendborn would be perfect for fans of King Arthur and readers that long for a magic system that we haven’t seen before.
