The Devil Takes You Home
by Gabino Iglesias
I could not stop reading this gory, dark, INCREDIBLY violent book. It’s has SO much going on: Mexican cartels & hitmen, terrifying and disgusting imagery, horror, adventure, revenge…all wrapped up in MAGICAL REALISM?! It’s so unique!
I genuinely felt nauseous at points reading this book…if you like messed up horror (I do) you will probably enjoy this.
A note on the Spanish text: I really liked the switching between the Spanish and the English in this book…It felt natural to me, especially within the context of the characters and the environment. I am not bilingual but I know some Spanish which helped with the reading experience. I could see people who don’t know ANY Spanish getting frustrated, but I don’t think you NEED to speak Spanish to enjoy this book…you do need to be open to the idea of learning/translating Spanish while you read it, but hey, aren’t we normally reading books to learn new things and to broaden our minds? :)
I honestly enjoyed the experience of practicing my Spanish while reading it.
Can’t wait to read Iglesias’ next novel!
