Your Name
by Makoto Shinkai
Books and movies are different mediums, that is obvious. When a film is adapted into a book, idealy they would complement each other. This was not the case with your name. Though this book gives us the inner thoughts of Mitsuha and Taki, it does not really offer another perspective and ultimately it is more of a summarization of events from the movie than anything else. This did not make use of the opportunities a book offers, which allows Mailto Shinkai to spend more time on events, whereas in film, time is always a constraint and things must always justify themselves or be cut. For example, he just recreates the montage in words, instead of expanding upon it.
You're better off just watching the movie. It's great. Makoto Shinkai creates beautiful love stories (and I mean that metaphorically, emotionally, and most of all, visually), where the boy and girl pass each other like ships in the night (in the case of Voices of a Different Star, the time dilation that emerges as one approaches the speed of light, and in the case of your name., they literally pass each other on separate trains and later,.
And he really captures the loss and loneliness as Mitsuha and Taki miss their opportunity. Skip this book and watch the movie.
