I expected this to be a simple and quick read in between my long fantasy and other historical fiction novels. But I was quickly told otherwise by the lines of the first paragraph that really set the tone for the rest of the book.

"For our labors Norbrook gave us two daily meals of corn mush and bone soup, an actual gift of a pair of pants, dresses for women, long shirts for the children, a pair of ill-fitting boots, and as many stripes as our black skins could bear."

This book really pulls at your heartstrings both in seeing their daily agonies as Stolen but also with their love they try and give to each other.
