Mama's Boy: A Story from Our Americas by Dustin Lance Black

5.0

i just really appreciate how this isn’t ur standard celebrity memoir in which the celebrity in question just goes back through all the hardships they endured in life and how they overcame them, basically proving to us how hard they worked to get where they are. of course, i’m not discrediting those stories at all but sometimes….it Does give off a little too much self-importance. dustin lance blacks memoir is truly rooted in the story of his mother and how his relationship with her affected his own life, making it already that much more unique than other celebrity memoirs. i think this also grounds the book a lot more in specific central themes about family, religion, and disability rather than just being a “crash course on the career of dlb”. it just feels more like this book came out of a genuine necessity to tell his mothers story than an excuse to fill a book with his accomplishments for some extra cash.

((not that that’s what other celebrity authors do…but kind of))
