Batman: R.I.P. by Grant Morrison

3.0

There are some superhero collections that you can pick up and, with only a cursory knowledge of the mythos, enjoy the story. Unfortunately, at least for me, I felt I needed to have read the stories that led up to this book before plunging into it.

The artwork is gorgeous (I found the Joker's new look particularly disturbing) and the writing is solid, but since I didn't understand the origins of the Black Glove and other characters and plot lines, it wasn't as enjoyable a read as it could have been.

The Deluxe hardcover edition is beautiful though and if I was collector, I think I'd be happy to have this on my shelf.

3 stars for the layperson, though I'm sure hardcore fans would give it a much higher rating.
