After finishing The Near Witch, this was a lovely little window into the character of Cole and what bought him to the outskirts of the village of Near. I would highly recommend reading The Near Witch first for full context (and also to avoid some minor-ish spoilers) but as a stand alone short, The Ash-Born Boy was highly enjoyable.
