Dog Songs by Mary Oliver

adventurous emotional funny hopeful inspiring reflective fast-paced

5.0

It's Mary Oliver, what can I really say that people haven't already said a dozen times before? She paints vivid, visceral, emotional images, charged with meaning while at the same time keeping her poetry really approachable. She's my go-to recommendation for most people looking to get into poetry because she's such a good introduction into what I love about the medium. Also, with this book in particular, I feel like she really captures the breadth of dog ownership while also keeping it tied to personal experience. Her writing spoke to me as someone who lost my childhood dog of 15 years a few months ago, of the beauty and the pain of it, and I really appreciated that reflection (as well as the lovely illustrations in my copy)
