Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan
4.0

With a bit of insomnia last night I powered through the last 100 pages. This was a surprisingly (for me) good book. I typically do not like epic, war based, fantasies. They usually focus on the the huge clashing battles, both the lead up and the actual battles themselves which isn't what I enjoy. Although Promise of Blood had the court intrigue that precedes these clashes of nations it had a much different flavour than most which I enjoyed.

Promise of blood has great characters, imperfect, disparate and easy to identify with. it has magic, both traditional hand-wavy magic and some opposing more unique magic (the powder mages). Not all the characters you get attached to live but most do, there are gods which always add a bit of excitement and there are almost gods. It was a very fun and nerve racking world. I will definitely look to pick up the next one.

As a side note, I loathe the fact that if I finish this on my kindle, Amazon feels the need to automatically mark this read on Goodreads. Like most of Apple's products, I don't need them to do these things for me, I will do them myself when I am good and ready.
