The Red Parts by Maggie Nelson

challenging dark emotional reflective sad tense slow-paced

5.0

for some reason i quite often find myself putting off things that i know i will undoubtedly love. reading maggie nelson was one of those things. maybe it’s because i knew i wasn’t prepared for just how deeply i was going to love her writing. i knew it would be overwhelming.

i can say without a hint of doubt that nelson is now one of my favourite writers — yes, after just one book. the reflexive self-consciousness with which she writes is so compelling. the way nelson chronicles the trial of her aunt’s murder and the details of her death as well as the dysfunction of her immediate family and a breakup with her lover is interwoven seamlessly into a memoir unlike anything i have ever read.

the red parts was informative, critical, tender, reflective, self aware and all consuming.
