O Vermelho e o Negro - Volume I by Stendhal

3.0

"Le rouge et le noir" (or "The red and the black", in English) is a french classic that starts in a very interesting way - a poor boy, Julien, starts working as a teacher for a rich family, the Renal family, where he will fall in love with the mother of the children he is teaching.

I've read this one in Portuguese, and writing wise, I loved it right from the start. The story itself caught me right away and the first half of this first volume was a very fast paced read. However, when I reach the second half, I felt the story didn't develop much so I start losing interest.

The romance between the main characters is not very well develop, in my opinion, and when they have to split up, I just lost all interest in the story. Julien ingress in the seminar, and, since I'm not a religious person, I don't usually fancy this storyline. Therefore, I don't think I will be reading the second volume any time soon.

This is not a bad book, far from it, but it's not my kind of book. I've read a lot of classics, it's one of my favorite genres, but there's a whole world inside classical literature. My favorite classics are english romances, preferably gothic romance ones. Nevertheless, this can be your kind of book, so consider giving it a try!
