I watched the film adaptation years ago and several times since, and it is honestly one of my favorite movies. It was so formative for me and helped me navigate my own identity as a queer person that I can't believe it took me this long to read the source material! And I'm happy to report that I was delighted by this book. It gave me all the warm fuzzy feelings and the comfort of a supportive friend group and an accepting family—that's not something a lot of queer teens get to experience so this sort of escapism is so crucial in giving them hope that there is an alternative way of living and that you don't have to just accept poor reactions to your coming out. While I like the structure and the stakes in the movie more, I fell more deeply in love with Simon's characterization here. He's a lot less sanitized, a lot funnier, and a lot more human. You really can't help but root for him. I'm so excited to read more of Becky Albertalli's work!
