Across the Universe
by Beth Revis
Across the Universe is one of those books that had been on my reading list since 2016, and a book about which I remembered almost nothing. Looking at the title and cover, I could see immediately what, in a general sense, was going to happen and why I added it to my list, or rather, why it came to my attention back then.
While I can say this was exactly what I expected, though it teeters into the disappointment realm, it was too much of a set and style that no longer holds my attention. Almost no surprises came my way, the chapters were incredibly short with the point of view alternating between the two main characters, and all those chapters ended with the dun-dun-dun kind of closer.
This was an incredibly predictable Young Adult sci-fi / fantasy from 2011, back when YA was still struggling to escape the even younger audience of the previous decades. (Which also goes into explaining a strangely placed assault scene in the book.) On the whole, the concept was interesting, but outside of that, the style, characters, and plot were just too over simplified for me. One of the books that I wish would've been written with a purely adult audience in mind. I will not be continuing this series.
