This was an emotional rollercoaster from the beginning. I love going into a book blind. It heightened the emotional factor for me.

We meet M’Kuru on page one, and it’s absolutely tragic. He’s ten years old, and the lone survivor of an attack on his noble family, and he’s out for revenge. He’s taken to a small village where he assumes the identity of a young farm boy named Khalil. It doesn’t get easier for M’Kuru/Khalil. The real Khalil is the illegitimate son of the savage general of Prince Effiom’s army. Zikora, who’s about 8 years old, unfortunately catches the attention of the King and Prince Effiom. She can’t refuse going to the palace. But she was a total badass. Then something strange happens: someone impersonates M’Kuru. Why would anyone want to do that? Who the hell knows?! But the plot thickens!

This book is full of magic and political intrigue. M’Kuru and Zikora being so young made this a little dark, but I was glued to this story. There was a moment in the middle of the story that lulled a little bit. It helped set up what was coming, so just be patient. Because of their ages, some events feel a little dark, and they should. The world-building was phenomenal. It made me feel like I was in Wakanda, and I loved it. There are plots, subplots, and multiple points of view. I’m excited for what is to come for book 2.
