This was very good!
I have to say I saw the film first, but I was still able to enjoy the books quite a lot.
Very well written, very well researched.
Perhaps a bit difficult for people that are not into science to follow, but I think the explanations provided came out very organic and explained in a way that can be understood.
We have an astronaut that was left alone in Mars, when the rest of his crew thought him dead, and from the moment he wakes up until the end of the book, it is pretty much survival mode for our space pirate Whatney. We follow him most of the story through his logs and he is clearly a very funny, witty, sarcastic, intelligent guy. Which made the reading so enjoyable. He focuses on what he can do, with what he has. Space MacGyver, of sorts, and he does incredible things. And in order to make things work, despite the crazy conditions, he keeps himself sane enough, and grounded enough. He is not over optimistic, or super pessimist. And this and his skills help him survive under terrible conditions.
Other characters add to the story: his crew on their way to Earth, and NASA people that have people working 24/7 to think of ways to bring Whatney home.
Story well told!
