Tigana: Anniversary Edition by Guy Gavriel Kay
slow-paced
- Strong character development? No
- Loveable characters? It's complicated
3.0
Lowering this to 3-stars upon re-read. The language is flowing and flowery, sometimes poetic and sometimes nauseating. The story is compelling and the themes thoroughly explored through a variety of characters. The pace of the book is glacial, however. The motivations of some characters seems unfounded as well. Certainly there is a great deal of passion for those who lost their homeland and its cultural identity, but for others, including one of our main protagonists who have no memory of the place their passion and self-sacrifice seems unearned. Sadly, the majority of the characters are also quite flat. We meet them after they have transitioned into their new mindsets, not before. When we do see a change in action it's sudden and hollow.
I liked this book, but that's all.
