Legacy of the Dead by Charles Todd

5.0

This was a 4.5 but I bumped it to 5 because I really did not want to put it down. The authors did a terrific job with the suspense. Ian Rutledge is a Scotland Yard inspector who survived the trenches of WWI but is haunted by a Scottish soldier. Rutledge is summoned to Scotland to investigate a body that may or may not be the remains of the daughter of Lady Maude Gray. The woman accused of the murder is tied to Rutledge's past and refuses to tell her story because she is trying to protect a little boy whom she is raising as her son. The writers keep the story moving and only occasionally drift into melodrama, and I thought they laid out the right number of red herrings. One problem with tangled plots is the writers get themselves tangled and confuse the reader, but that never happens and I enjoyed the storytelling immensely. Recommended for mystery fans--I am reading this series in order.
