The Light of the Fireflies
by Paul Pen
At the beginning I couldn't put it down, but towards the end it started to unravel a bit and some parts were a bit confusing. The set-up was pretty far-fetched. Also, I am uneasy about the treatment of the sister, the implication seemed to be that she deserved her fate. And why wasn't she given the same love and forgiveness as her brother? Likewise the brother's behaviour, which was truly horrific, seemed to be brushed over. There were a lot of holes in it. There must have been a police investigation at some point, did they not wonder what had happened to the bodies? Why do they choose to stay there forever and not get away later? They do not seem to have a problem with raising two boys in an enclosed and claustrophobic environment with a violent man who has killed things he loved. When was the sex/rape supposed to be taking place and how come the main character had no idea in that small basement? What income were they living on both then and at the end? I could go on...
