Where do I even begin? I knew after reading the first chapter that this would be one of my favorite books, and it lived up to that prediction and then some. What a gorgeously written multigenerational saga! I’m so thankful to have discovered ann-marie macdonald, her way with words is brilliant and deeply poetic — phrases she writes in this book would sit with me for days after I read them. It has been so long since I read a book that I truly did not put down for hours and had to ration out because I was dreading the moment it would end. This is the kind of book that makes you cry for the beauty and pain of life, for all the sadness and perfect imperfections that come with being alive and loving those around you. highly highly recommend.
